The Peacoat

Posted on November 7, 2018

I was writing at home, or trying to, when the desire to get up out of my chair finally struck me. I needed out, I needed to get out into the fall weather and interact with humans and stop looking at the page. I grabbed my pea coat, slipped it on, and slipped out the door. My girlfriend at the time wasn’t home yet. The night was cold, and my feet slid over wet leaves that covered the grimy Portland sidewalk. Several times, I had to check my pace or risk falling to the tar. I took in the night air, letting it fill my lungs and letting my eyes adjust to the darkness. Upon entering the store, I wandered around aimlessly. I wasn’t…

THE WRITE LIFE: Writing Prompt #12

Posted on August 4, 2018

In an effort to write more, and more creatively, I’ve begun to post writing prompts here on my blog and this is one of them. Feel free to use any of the prompts, which you can find archived under the Write Life tab under the Categories section of my home page. Feel free to also share anything you create based around the prompts.     You come across an old record store. When you enter through the doorway, you realize this is not your average record store at all.     Happy writing! -Joe

THE WRITE LIFE: Writing Prompt #11

Posted on August 1, 2018

It’s my weekly blogging day, so I am back with another couple of writing prompts before I try and finish my main blog post of the day. I’m doing these prompts not only to help me (because I get Writer’s Block a lot) – but also hopefully to help you. Feel free to use this prompt, and you can find past prompts archived under THE WRITE LIFE tab under the Categories section on my home page. Feel free to share your results in the comments.     You are a business man or a business woman and during the week you’re being put up in a hotel. One night when you come back to your room, you notice there’s a voodoo doll laying on…

THE WRITE LIFE: Shawn French

Posted on July 25, 2018

Writers are so often viewed as tortured, solitary creatures who spend their waking hours hovering over the keys of their battered laptops in a dank basement or in the corner of a coffee shop, agonizing over their words. While it is true that the act of writing is mostly something one does on their own, it can also be a very social activity under the right circumstances. I am thankful to know many very talented writers from all walks of life, and I began this segment on my blog as a way to not only celebrate those friendships, but to also maybe learn what makes my fellow writers tic. It’s my pleasure to introduce to you another one of my writer friends, Shawn French.…

I felt like posting another writing prompt, and so here we are. Feel free to use this prompt, as well as past entries (found under the WRITE LIFE tab under the Categories section on my home page) to break free of the dreaded Writer’s Block. Check back often for more ideas. Feel free to link me to anything you’ve written using the prompts. Good luck!   A flight attendant is having an otherwise normal day when she learns that one of her passengers has somehow managed to bring a weapon on board the plane.

THE WRITE LIFE: Writing Prompt #9

It’s time again for another writing prompt! Hope you all have been digging your way out of writer’s block, but feel free to use the exercise as a way to lift yourself out of the mire you’re currently in. Past entries can be found under the Write Life tab under Categories on my home page.   You really think you know someone, and it turns out you have been completely bamboozled. Write about someone who is pretending to be someone or something that they are not.

The Write Life: Avoiding Writer’s Block.

Posted on July 10, 2018

Writing can be an extremely frustrating and hopelessly solitary artistic endeavor, and as writers we know and understand this when we choose it as our lifestyle. Yet it doesn’t make it any easier when we’re holed up in the basement, writing the next big thing on our minds. Whether you’re trying to write a blog post, a poem, a screenplay, or a novel – Writer’s Block afflicts us all. I know that personally, real life usually gets in the way and saps my creative juices with its constant demands, but to keep writing I have acquired several techniques which I use in order to get my brain jumpstarted again. My hope is to share a couple of my own techniques with you. I know…
