Excelsior: My Tribute To Stan Lee

Posted on November 13, 2018

*Artwork by me.   I don’t have any photos with Stan Lee. I was never lucky enough to meet the man in real life – So, on top of that, I also don’t have any touching anecdotes about how I met him in an elevator once, or how I sat down next to him at a convention, or anything else I’ve been grateful to read about him on the day of his death. Stan Lee never encountered me once during the 95 years he roamed our Earth – he didn’t know I even existed. And yet the mark he left on me was indelible, and though he didn’t know I existed – he knew lots of people LIKE me. I was an archetype in…

The Comics

“Then how come Spider-Man has a black suit, but he’s also got a red and blue one? There’s gotta’ be two different guys. Why would he have two suits? That’s stupid.” One of my cousins, Jimmy, posed this question to me as my other two cousins, Eddie and Chris, flanked him on either side. They all looked irritated. I was only seven years old at the time and was visiting my cousin’s house with my mother. My cousins lived in a rural town here in Maine called Dixfield – on a farm with no running water. Every morning, we had to fetch cold water from the creek in plastic buckets and haul them back to the house before we fed the animals. My mother…

My Top Ten Favorite DC Comics Characters

Posted on August 26, 2015

I do a lot of interviews with this blog between my Friend Files, Cosplay Confessions, and Eight Simple Questions features. One thing I haven’t really done is indulge in a bit of personal fun with an interview of my own. I mean, what’s the use of having my own blog if I can’t rant about my favorite foods, movies, etc? So with this post, I’m going to write about my top ten favorite DC Comics characters. Now, to preface this, I have never been a massive DC Comics fan. Yes, they’re comics and feature superheroes – so I will read them, but to me, DC characters have always been less human and more like gods. With all of that said, there are a few…

Friend Files #17 – Ariana Whalen

Posted on August 20, 2015

Friend Files is a feature I’ve added to Away With Words, this being the seventeenth installment. Past installments appear under the “Friend Files” tag on my blog. I will be interviewing a friend of mine and showcasing why they are a friend to me and what I like about them, and also a mini-interview (five questions) that detail what they think of me. It’s a way to acknowledge my friends out there and what they’re up to and also introduce them to my larger group of friends, acquaintances, and anyone else who might be interested in reading. Today, I will be talking about Ariana Whalen. Before I get into what I think of her, here is my mini-interview with Ariana (exchanged over Facebook) where she jotted down…

Home Made Action Figures

When I was growing up, my family was poor. Not just poor as in we couldn’t get Cap’n Crunch and had to get a bag of “puffed rice” instead – we were really, actually poor. Poor as in roaches thrived in almost every apartment we lived in (when we were able to live in an apartment and not a hotel room, car, or barn). We had head lice, we often went hungry, we even ate at homeless shelters a few times. As a kid in this environment, I didn’t really know that it wasn’t exactly “normal”. Not until later, anyway. No, at that age I sort of accepted everything that happened to me at face value. Other kids at school had lots of G.I.…
