My Top Ten Favorite Fighting Games

Posted on November 6, 2018

I’ve recently been trying to re-focus my blog to a more personal direction, writing creative non-fiction and tales from my childhood. Yet, the other “segments” I’ve created for my blog, such as Top Ten – still call to me. I feel like it’s time to do another. As I was wondering what subject I should write about for this installment of Top Ten, the idea hit me like a massive Hadouken. I should totally do a Top Ten based around my love for fighting games. I’ve always been a big fan of fighting games, though I was never good at them. Because the games usually focus only on fighting, a big chunk of the art direction goes into making the graphics as slick as…

Friend Files #20 – Alicia Dutremble

Posted on October 11, 2015

Friend Files is a feature I’ve added to Away With Words, this being the twentieth installment. Past installments appear under the “Friend Files” tag on my blog. I will be interviewing a friend of mine and showcasing why they are a friend to me and what I like about them, and also a mini-interview (five questions) that detail what they think of me. It’s a way to acknowledge my friends out there and what they’re up to and also introduce them to my larger group of friends, acquaintances, and anyone else who might be interested in reading. Today, I will be talking about Alicia Dutremble. Before I get into what I think of her, here is my mini-interview with Alicia (exchanged over Facebook) where she jotted down just…

Away With Words Is One Year Old – Thank You

Posted on May 7, 2015

Wow – a lot has happened in a year. I switched job locations so that I’d cut out 100 hours of driving time per week. I graduated from Stonecoast, my MFA program. I moved in with my girlfriend to one of the biggest cities in Maine (yeah, yeah – I can hear you laughing from here…but it’s a cool city). I also had lots of fun and attended many conventions and family events. And, of course, my blog slowly made changes, too. I added the feature called Friend Files where I showcased one of my friends with each entry and why I appreciate them. I added the feature called Cosplay Confessions where I interviewed a cosplayer and asked them some basic questions about their…

Why Football Culture Is Not For Me

Posted on February 6, 2015

American Football. Being from the frost-bitten northeastern United States, there are plenty of customs and activities that we do to keep ourselves warm and busy during the snowy winter months. There is hunting, there is snowmobiling or skiing, and there is, of course, football. Much in the same way that I’m derided as not being a “true” Mainer for not enjoying seafood, or being outside in the cold, I can also attest that I’ve gotten this same sort of sentiment for not enjoying America’s favorite pastime. There are several reasons for this.   The first reason is that I suck at sports. No, really. Always have, always will. It’s not that I’m super out-of-shape, although I could stand to be more healthy and active.…
