Excelsior: My Tribute To Stan Lee

Posted on November 13, 2018

*Artwork by me.   I don’t have any photos with Stan Lee. I was never lucky enough to meet the man in real life – So, on top of that, I also don’t have any touching anecdotes about how I met him in an elevator once, or how I sat down next to him at a convention, or anything else I’ve been grateful to read about him on the day of his death. Stan Lee never encountered me once during the 95 years he roamed our Earth – he didn’t know I even existed. And yet the mark he left on me was indelible, and though he didn’t know I existed – he knew lots of people LIKE me. I was an archetype in…

The Comics

Posted on August 5, 2018

“Then how come Spider-Man has a black suit, but he’s also got a red and blue one? There’s gotta’ be two different guys. Why would he have two suits? That’s stupid.” One of my cousins, Jimmy, posed this question to me as my other two cousins, Eddie and Chris, flanked him on either side. They all looked irritated. I was only seven years old at the time and was visiting my cousin’s house with my mother. My cousins lived in a rural town here in Maine called Dixfield – on a farm with no running water. Every morning, we had to fetch cold water from the creek in plastic buckets and haul them back to the house before we fed the animals. My mother…

My Top Ten Favorite Women Actors

Posted on October 19, 2015

I already did a Top Ten post this week, but it was featuring all male actors so I felt I needed to do another one – almost like a “part two”…this time featuring my top ten favorite women actors. This will follow the format of my previous post (and please check that one out HERE if you haven’t already) which consists of The Good (The best role), The Bad (The worst role), and The Sexy (A racy photo because….hey, they are celebrities right? And yeah, I did it for the guys, too). Keep in mind that this is a list of my own favorites, and it is subject to change over the years. In any case – let’s get on with it! 10. HALLE…

Friend Files #21 – Ramon Anderson-Martinez

Posted on October 14, 2015

Friend Files is a feature I added to my blog, Away With Words, a while back – this being the 21st installment. Past installments appear under the “Friend Files” tag on my blog. I will be interviewing a friend of mine and showcasing why they are a friend to me and what I like about them, and also a mini-interview (five questions) that detail what they think of me. It’s a way to acknowledge my friends out there and what they’re up to and also introduce them to my larger group of friends, acquaintances, and anyone else who might be interested in reading. Today, I will be talking about Ramon Anderson – Martinez. Before I get into what I think of him, here is my mini-interview with Ramon (exchanged…

Eight Simple Questions – An Interview With Writer & Artist Joseph Schmalke

Posted on March 14, 2015

While I was attending Stonecoast, I needed to come up with a third-semester project. I knew I wanted to involve comic books somehow, but wasn’t sure exactly what I wanted to do. What I was sure of was that I wanted to take advantage of any connections I had made with people I met at comic book conventions and people I was going to school with. So I came up with eight simple questions and had multiple comic book writers and sometimes artists answer them and collected the interviews into one small book. So, in the same vein as my new blog feature “Friend Files” – I present to you the interview I had with comic artist and writer Joseph Schmalke. Joseph Schmalke is…

Cosplay Confessions: Joseph Carro Cosplay

Posted on January 30, 2015

Cosplay Confessions is yet another monthly feature I’m adding to my blog. Every month, I plan on featuring a different cosplayer and my interview with them, along with photos featuring their cosplays. This will not only be beneficial to the cosplayers themselves – because any publicity is good publicity when it comes to updating your fans on which conventions you’ll be at, and what you’re working on – but it will also be beneficial to those who are interested in cosplay as a hobby. Since this is a new feature, I have asked some cosplayers I know to fill out my questions and I hope to hear back from them soon. Since I have nobody to go at this particular time, I figured I’d…

In Defense Of Manara (NSFW)

Posted on September 2, 2014

We’ve all seen the ALTERNATE cover of the upcoming Spider-Woman solo comic book by Marvel Comics. Jessica Drew – aka Spider-Woman –  is crawling up over the edge of a building in New York City in a classic Spider-Man pose – but with a more sexual edge than normal (or is it?). Her butt is rising into the air, the centerpiece of the illustration. Her costume is tight, clinging to her curves like her own skin, but in different colors. One can imagine the men on the street below, who happen to be glancing skyward, seeing her scandalous rump disappearing over the edge and how they then start to sweat. Mothers shield their children’s eyes. We, as the potential reader, are assaulted with this…
