My Friend Mikey

Posted on December 5, 2018

Sometimes, I think back about friends I had who are no longer with me. This doesn’t have to have anything to do with death, mind you. Sometimes, as people, we just outgrow each other. You move, you go to different schools, you get married. Those kinds of things happen and are pretty inevitable in life. One of these friends I had who fits into this category was named Mike. We all knew him affectionately as Mikey. We met one summer when my mom moved us to Shawmut Street in Lewiston, Maine. We lived in a crappy apartment, infested with fleas and in a bad part of town at the time. We didn’t notice much of that as children, though, only remembering it when we…

The Kancamagus Highway

Posted on November 10, 2018

There’s a somewhat alarming sign that greets you as you approach the western end of the Kancamagus (pronounced “Kan-kuh-MOG-us” if you were wondering) Highway in Lincoln, New Hampshire. It reads “No gas for the next 32 miles”. As you pass the sign, you drive along a narrow stretch of road that winds itself through the White Mountains and through some extremely beautiful scenery. It’s a real treat in the fall, when the foliage is popping – but it can be a wonderful experience in the summer as well. Driving the Kancamagus  in the fall is like rolling through a kaleidoscope of autumnal color. You lose yourself momentarily as hills give way to stoic mountains covered with shocks of reds, yellows, browns, and even the…

Ludo

I’ve always had a soft spot for cats, dogs, and other household pets. When I was just a boy, we had a black cat we’d named Blackie (I know that sounds racist, but he was named actually after a local Frenchman who ran a convenience store right next door to us – the store was named “Blackie’s”). Blackie was my first ever pet, and as such – he earned a particularly love-filled spot in my heart that never completely healed when we were forced to get rid of him. I was only four or five years old when we did. Fast forward to me now in my thirties, and I have yet to have a pet to call my absolute own, though I now…

The Jacket

Posted on August 26, 2018

I remember the morning very well. My wife (at the time) and I were house-sitting for an older couple in a bright and spacious home in Old Orchard Beach here in Maine. Before we left for the day to her parent’s house in Limington to celebrate the holidays with them, we each decided to give each other a Christmas gift. She handed me the package and I remember slowly tearing the paper from around a box, the kind that clothes are usually wrapped in, and then pulling out a faux-leather jacket. I smiled, thanked her, and kissed her on the lips. “Thank you,” I said. “A leather coat? So cool. Haven’t had one of these since I worked at Timberland.” She smiled and waited…

The Fading Photo

Posted on August 24, 2018

The night before our wedding, I was surrounded by my brothers and by good friends I considered brothers. My heart was smiling like it had never smiled before. My face hurt from trying to keep up with my heart. You were at your sister’s and you had an early morning of wedding prep ahead of you. Besides, it was bad luck to see the bride before the wedding ceremony. We didn’t want any of that because we’d had enough bad luck already. I told you I’d miss you, you told me not to stay up too late and that you loved me with your entire being. We texted each other emojis, and I stayed up for a long time even after you’d stopped texting…

SUMMER 2018 UPDATE

Posted on July 24, 2018

*Photo courtesy Peyton Carro It’s summer, and as most of you no doubt understand – Summer is a time for activity. My wife Peyton and I try to do something at least once a week which involves travel of some sort, and coupled with a full-time job in the retail world with a changing schedule, I rarely have time to finish my blog posts when I want to so I figured I’d at least drop in and let y’all know what I’ve been doing here in the wilds of Maine. First – the travel I mentioned. I’ve long come to terms with the fact that I will never be a globe-trotter. I do, however, travel extensively on a local level. Since Spring started, I’ve…

My Top Ten Favorite Action Films

Posted on March 30, 2018

It’s spring, so it’s almost time for those summer blockbusters to hit the big screen. Being that I haven’t done one of these Top Ten lists in a while, I figured I’d take aim and fire off my top ten favorite action films. These are films I’ve carefully thought about, and while they are in a numbered order for the purposes of this list – I think these movies fluctuate up and down, though they mostly all stay in the top ten. Let’s get to it.   10. THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT (1996) PLOT: Suburban mom, Samantha Caine (Geena Davis), lives in Honesdale, Pennsylvania with her daughter Caitlin (Yvonne Zima) doing the mom thing and dealing with amnesia. When Samantha receives a bump on the…
