My Top Ten Favorite Fighting Games

Posted on November 6, 2018

I’ve recently been trying to re-focus my blog to a more personal direction, writing creative non-fiction and tales from my childhood. Yet, the other “segments” I’ve created for my blog, such as Top Ten – still call to me. I feel like it’s time to do another. As I was wondering what subject I should write about for this installment of Top Ten, the idea hit me like a massive Hadouken. I should totally do a Top Ten based around my love for fighting games. I’ve always been a big fan of fighting games, though I was never good at them. Because the games usually focus only on fighting, a big chunk of the art direction goes into making the graphics as slick as…

Dungeons & Dragons Is Back

Posted on July 26, 2018

For many people, playing Dungeons & Dragons, (also known as D&D) and by extension playing any role-playing game, has long been something for the “nerds”. Inaccessible, confusing, tedious. As a kid, I started playing with the 2nd Edition after my stepfather showed us all one of his lovingly preserved character sheets. He explained to us that his character had several skills, and possessed a fair amount of treasure he’d acquired through playing the game. I was immediately intrigued and wanted a character of my own, and as soon as the opportunity presented itself, I sought out some D&D books at my local library to learn what exactly D&D was and how to play it. Within no time, my friends and I were playing it for…

THE WRITE LIFE: Shawn French

Posted on July 25, 2018

Writers are so often viewed as tortured, solitary creatures who spend their waking hours hovering over the keys of their battered laptops in a dank basement or in the corner of a coffee shop, agonizing over their words. While it is true that the act of writing is mostly something one does on their own, it can also be a very social activity under the right circumstances. I am thankful to know many very talented writers from all walks of life, and I began this segment on my blog as a way to not only celebrate those friendships, but to also maybe learn what makes my fellow writers tic. It’s my pleasure to introduce to you another one of my writer friends, Shawn French.…

A NERDY HISTORY

Posted on April 16, 2018

Of Dice And Men: The Story of Dungeons & Dragons and the People Who Play It By David M. Ewalt 288 pp. Scribner, $26.00 When one normally thinks of the often-derided role playing game Dungeons & Dragons, images of slack-jawed, hunchbacked nerds and obsessed geeks come to the forefront of the imagination. This is due largely in part to society and how it originally envisioned those who played (or play) the game in years past. However, with celebrities like Vin Diesel and others coming forward and saying they enjoyed the game, and with D&D being featured in popular television shows like Stranger Things – the image of the unpopular “nerd” is no longer reality. In a series of carefully-constructed vignettes wrapped around a larger…

Friend Files #14 – Heinz Neethling

Posted on February 25, 2015

Friend Files is a new feature I’ve added to Away With Words, this being just the fourteenth installment. I will be interviewing a friend of mine and showcasing whythey are a friend to me and what I like about them, and also a mini-interview (five questions) that detail what they think of me. It’s a way to acknowledge my friends out there and what they’re up to and also introduce them to my larger group of friends, acquaintances, and anyone else who might be interested in reading. Today, I will be talking about Heinz Neethling. Before I get into what I think of him, here is my mini-interview with Heinz (exchanged over Facebook) where he jotted down just a few thoughts:     HEINZ NEETHLING’S…

My Life According To Games

Posted on February 11, 2015

I ran into this little survey on Facebook and it struck a chord with me, so I am using it as an opportunity to create another blog post. Video games have long been a source of entertainment to me, and I don’t think that will stop any time soon. Here we go.     1. FAVORITE GAME: This one is actually a really hard decision for me. There have only been a handful of games to actually move me enough to utter something as bold as “This is my FAVORITE GAME EVER”. Chrono Trigger is definitely one of them. I mean, I just wrote a 3,000 word blog post on why I believe it proves beyond a reasonable doubt that video games can be art.…

Friend Files is a new feature I’ve added to Away With Words, this being just the third installment. I will be interviewing a friend of mine and showcasing why they are a friend to me and what I like about them, and also a mini-interview (five questions) that detail what they think of me. It’s a way to acknowledge my friends out there and what they’re up to and introduce them to my larger group of friends, acquaintances, and anyone else who might be interested in reading. Today, I will be talking about another Joe – Joe Michael Malia. Before I get into what I think of him, here is my mini-interview with Joe (exchanged over e-mail and Facebook) where he jotted down just a…
