The Kancamagus Highway

Posted on November 10, 2018

There’s a somewhat alarming sign that greets you as you approach the western end of the Kancamagus (pronounced “Kan-kuh-MOG-us” if you were wondering) Highway in Lincoln, New Hampshire. It reads “No gas for the next 32 miles”. As you pass the sign, you drive along a narrow stretch of road that winds itself through the White Mountains and through some extremely beautiful scenery. It’s a real treat in the fall, when the foliage is popping – but it can be a wonderful experience in the summer as well. Driving the Kancamagus¬† in the fall is like rolling through a kaleidoscope of autumnal color. You lose yourself momentarily as hills give way to stoic mountains covered with shocks of reds, yellows, browns, and even the…

The Jacket

Posted on August 26, 2018

I remember the morning very well. My wife (at the time) and I were house-sitting for an older couple in a bright and spacious home in Old Orchard Beach here in Maine. Before we left for the day to her parent’s house in Limington to celebrate the holidays with them, we each decided to give each other a Christmas gift. She handed me the package and I remember slowly tearing the paper from around a box, the kind that clothes are usually wrapped in, and then pulling out a faux-leather jacket. I smiled, thanked her, and kissed her on the lips. “Thank you,” I said. “A leather coat? So cool. Haven’t had one of these since I worked at Timberland.” She smiled and waited…

The Fading Photo

The night before our wedding, I was surrounded by my brothers and by good friends I considered brothers. My heart was smiling like it had never smiled before. My face hurt from trying to keep up with my heart. You were at your sister’s and you had an early morning of wedding prep ahead of you. Besides, it was bad luck to see the bride before the wedding ceremony. We didn’t want any of that because we’d had enough bad luck already. I told you I’d miss you, you told me not to stay up too late and that you loved me with your entire being. We texted each other emojis, and I stayed up for a long time even after you’d stopped texting…

Halloween In Salem, Massachusetts

Posted on November 12, 2015

When most people think of Salem, Massachusetts – they undoubtedly think of witches. It’s something that has defined that town since the Salem witch trials back in the 1690’s. Much like people coming to Maine to experience lobster or Stephen King (seriously, people just go right to his house in Bangor and hang out in front of it), thousands of people flock to Salem every October in the hopes of going on spooky ghost hunts or buying a haunted tarot deck or doing one of the many, many touristy activities one can find in Salem. For my own part, I’ve been going to Salem almost every year since 2007. When I first started going to Salem, I was with my (now) ex-wife (though we…

The Rat

Back when I was married, I did lots of homebody things. We worked on the pipes underneath the house (I actually had to do that twice, which sucked big time), we tried to expand the yard for the animals, we made little improvements that took a lot of time and ate a lot of money but didn’t really outwardly show unless we pointed it out to someone who had been there before we fixed it. During this time, I felt I bonded with my wife’s father. He was a gruff guy on the exterior. He rode motorcycles, worked on cars and built them from scratch, did a lot of yard work and maintenance things. He was a real “man’s man”. I was the opposite,…
