Danforth Street

Posted on December 7, 2018

I walked with a hobble down Danforth Street in Portland, Maine. It was around fifty degrees, and the air had a chill to it. There was nothing going on that I could see, and the night seemed extra quiet. Still, as is my habit since I don’t trust people, I kept looking behind me to see if I was being shadowed. I could never quite shake that feeling. Nobody there, of course. Better safe than sorry, though. My right foot had something wrong with it. A bone that was out of place, a cramp…something. Whatever it was – it made me limp along. I didn’t pay much attention to it. It would walk itself out. That’s how foot things usually worked, right? After a…

My Friend Mikey

Posted on December 5, 2018

Sometimes, I think back about friends I had who are no longer with me. This doesn’t have to have anything to do with death, mind you. Sometimes, as people, we just outgrow each other. You move, you go to different schools, you get married. Those kinds of things happen and are pretty inevitable in life. One of these friends I had who fits into this category was named Mike. We all knew him affectionately as Mikey. We met one summer when my mom moved us to Shawmut Street in Lewiston, Maine. We lived in a crappy apartment, infested with fleas and in a bad part of town at the time. We didn’t notice much of that as children, though, only remembering it when we…

The Fading Photo

Posted on August 24, 2018

The night before our wedding, I was surrounded by my brothers and by good friends I considered brothers. My heart was smiling like it had never smiled before. My face hurt from trying to keep up with my heart. You were at your sister’s and you had an early morning of wedding prep ahead of you. Besides, it was bad luck to see the bride before the wedding ceremony. We didn’t want any of that because we’d had enough bad luck already. I told you I’d miss you, you told me not to stay up too late and that you loved me with your entire being. We texted each other emojis, and I stayed up for a long time even after you’d stopped texting…

THE WRITE LIFE: Writing Prompt #12

Posted on August 4, 2018

In an effort to write more, and more creatively, I’ve begun to post writing prompts here on my blog and this is one of them. Feel free to use any of the prompts, which you can find archived under the Write Life tab under the Categories section of my home page. Feel free to also share anything you create based around the prompts.     You come across an old record store. When you enter through the doorway, you realize this is not your average record store at all.     Happy writing! -Joe

THE WRITE LIFE: Writing Prompt #11

Posted on August 1, 2018

It’s my weekly blogging day, so I am back with another couple of writing prompts before I try and finish my main blog post of the day. I’m doing these prompts not only to help me (because I get Writer’s Block a lot) – but also hopefully to help you. Feel free to use this prompt, and you can find past prompts archived under THE WRITE LIFE tab under the Categories section on my home page. Feel free to share your results in the comments.     You are a business man or a business woman and during the week you’re being put up in a hotel. One night when you come back to your room, you notice there’s a voodoo doll laying on…

THE WRITE LIFE: Shawn French

Posted on July 25, 2018

Writers are so often viewed as tortured, solitary creatures who spend their waking hours hovering over the keys of their battered laptops in a dank basement or in the corner of a coffee shop, agonizing over their words. While it is true that the act of writing is mostly something one does on their own, it can also be a very social activity under the right circumstances. I am thankful to know many very talented writers from all walks of life, and I began this segment on my blog as a way to not only celebrate those friendships, but to also maybe learn what makes my fellow writers tic. It’s my pleasure to introduce to you another one of my writer friends, Shawn French.…

THE WRITE LIFE: Writing Prompt #8

Posted on July 7, 2018

As usual, it’s time for another writing prompt. I haven’t posted many lately because I’ve been so busy (I’ll write an update post later) but I felt like doing one differently than my normal “formula”. Feel free to post whatever you come up with in the comments, or even if you want to just let me know what you thought of the prompt. You can find past writing prompts under the WRITE LIFE tag under Categories on my main page. ————————————————————————————————————————————— With cold, grey eyes set into loose features, the old man with wispy hair watched the young couple struggle up the hill in the snow. His lips were dry and cracked and he wet them absentmindedly with his tongue as the chill seeped…
