Excelsior: My Tribute To Stan Lee

Posted on November 13, 2018

*Artwork by me.   I don’t have any photos with Stan Lee. I was never lucky enough to meet the man in real life – So, on top of that, I also don’t have any touching anecdotes about how I met him in an elevator once, or how I sat down next to him at a convention, or anything else I’ve been grateful to read about him on the day of his death. Stan Lee never encountered me once during the 95 years he roamed our Earth – he didn’t know I even existed. And yet the mark he left on me was indelible, and though he didn’t know I existed – he knew lots of people LIKE me. I was an archetype in…

The Comics

Posted on August 5, 2018

“Then how come Spider-Man has a black suit, but he’s also got a red and blue one? There’s gotta’ be two different guys. Why would he have two suits? That’s stupid.” One of my cousins, Jimmy, posed this question to me as my other two cousins, Eddie and Chris, flanked him on either side. They all looked irritated. I was only seven years old at the time and was visiting my cousin’s house with my mother. My cousins lived in a rural town here in Maine called Dixfield – on a farm with no running water. Every morning, we had to fetch cold water from the creek in plastic buckets and haul them back to the house before we fed the animals. My mother…

THE WRITE LIFE: Shawn French

Posted on July 25, 2018

Writers are so often viewed as tortured, solitary creatures who spend their waking hours hovering over the keys of their battered laptops in a dank basement or in the corner of a coffee shop, agonizing over their words. While it is true that the act of writing is mostly something one does on their own, it can also be a very social activity under the right circumstances. I am thankful to know many very talented writers from all walks of life, and I began this segment on my blog as a way to not only celebrate those friendships, but to also maybe learn what makes my fellow writers tic. It’s my pleasure to introduce to you another one of my writer friends, Shawn French.…

Some More Updates.

Posted on March 18, 2018

Hey, all! I have really been thinking about how I want to utilize this space as a writer. 2018 for me is hopefully the year of positive growth and development in my writing career, and so I want to really nail down what I think makes me a better writer. And so I have decided to read a lot more books (obviously in addition to writing more). As many of you know, I already have a review blog that I have sort of put on the back burner indefinitely. On it, I reviewed everything from books to video games to movies, and even restaurants. It was a lot of work, and I was pretty proud of it. But for Away With Words, I wanted…

Eight Simple Questions – An Interview With Comic Creator Clay McCormack

Posted on December 1, 2016

While I was attending Stonecoast, I needed to come up with a third-semester project. I knew I wanted to involve comic books somehow, but wasn’t sure exactly what I wanted to do. What I was sure of was that I wanted to take advantage of any connections I had made with people I met at comic book conventions and people I was going to school with. So I came up with eight simple questions and had multiple comic book writers and sometimes artists answer them and collected the interviews into one small book. So, in the same vein as my blog feature “Friend Files” – I present to you the interview I had with comic book writer and creator Clay McCormack. I met Clay…

Friend Files #26: Kate Salvato

Posted on December 1, 2016

Friend Files is a feature I added to my blog, Away With Words, a while back – this being the 26th installment. Past installments appear under the “Friend Files” tag on my blog. I will be interviewing a friend of mine and showcasing why they are a friend to me and what I like about them, and also a mini-interview (five questions) that detail what they think of me. It’s a way to acknowledge my friends out there and what they’re up to and also to introduce them to my larger group of friends, acquaintances, and anyone else who might be interested in reading online. Today, I will be talking about Kate Salvato. Before I get into what I think of her, here is my mini-interview with Kate (exchanged…
